Do you enjoy a warm dessert with a crisp outside and a soft center? Let’s make homemade churros together. Churros are long pieces of fried dough with a ridged surface and a sweet cinnamon coating.
The dough is shaped through a star-shaped pastry tip, which creates the familiar lines around each piece.
This recipe makes about 4 servings and takes around 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to cook. With simple ingredients and clear steps, we can make a fresh batch without a complicated process.

Ingredients We Need

Let’s measure everything before cooking so each step moves smoothly.
- 1 cup water
- 2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup white sugar for coating
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For an optional chocolate dip, we can also prepare:
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Step 1: Make The Dough

- Place 1 cup of water, 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a small saucepan.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat. Once it reaches a full boil, remove the pan from the heat.
- Add 1 cup of flour and stir continuously with a sturdy spoon. Keep mixing until the flour absorbs the liquid and a thick dough forms. The mixture should pull away from the sides of the pan and come together as one soft mass.

Step 2: Prepare The Coating

- While the dough rests briefly, prepare the cinnamon sugar.
- Place 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Stir them together until the cinnamon is evenly distributed.
- Set the bowl aside. We will use this mixture immediately after cooking while the churros are still warm.

Step 3: Heat The Oil

- Pour about 2 quarts of vegetable oil into a deep, heavy saucepan or deep fryer.
- Heat it to 375°F (190°C). During cooking, try to keep the temperature between 350°F and 375°F (175°C to 190°C).
- A kitchen thermometer can make this step easier. If the temperature becomes too high, lower the heat and wait for it to return to the desired range.

Step 4: Shape The Dough

- Transfer the dough into a sturdy pastry bag fitted with a medium star-shaped tip.
- Once the oil reaches the correct temperature, carefully squeeze the dough into the hot oil. Make each piece about 5 to 6 inches long.
- Cook only a few pieces at a time. Leaving space between them helps the oil move around each piece and keeps the temperature more stable.

Step 5: Cook Until Golden

- Fry the churros until the outside becomes golden and crisp. Turn them gently when needed so they cook evenly.
- Once they reach a warm golden color, remove them with a slotted spoon. Place them on paper towels for a short time to drain excess oil.
- Keep an eye on the cooking process because the pieces can change color quickly once the oil is hot.

Step 6: Add Cinnamon Sugar

- While the churros are still warm, place them into the prepared cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Roll each piece gently until the surface is covered. The ridges help hold the sweet coating, giving every bite a pleasant cinnamon flavor.
- For a lighter finish, use a thin coating. For a sweeter result, roll each piece a second time.

Step 7: Make The Chocolate Dip

- For an optional dip, place 1/2 cup heavy cream and 1/2 cup chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat for 30 seconds, then stir well. If the chocolate has not melted completely, continue heating in short intervals and stir after each one.
- When the mixture becomes smooth, let it cool slightly before serving.

Serving And Storage

We can serve the churros warm on a plate with the chocolate dip in a small bowl on the side. The crisp ridges pair nicely with the smooth sauce, while the cinnamon sugar adds a simple sweet finish.
If we have leftovers, let them cool completely. Place them in an airtight container lined with paper towels and keep them at room temperature for up to 2 days. They are best soon after cooking, when the outside is crisp and the center is tender.
Lykkers, the key to good homemade churros is simple preparation. We measure the ingredients first, keep the frying temperature steady, avoid crowding the pan, and coat the pieces while they are still warm.
Now we can bring everything together and enjoy a fresh homemade dessert. Would you choose the classic cinnamon-sugar finish, or would you serve your churros with the creamy chocolate dip? Let’s make a batch and discover which version becomes our favorite.
